Is it considered sunnah to intentionally neglect ghayr-muakkadah sunnahs?

It is not accurate to say “it is sunnah to abandon” them; rather, it is more appropriate to say, “it is sunnah to practice them occasionally.” This means that a person cannot expect to receive the reward (thawab) for sunnah if they choose to neglect them.

Ghayr-muakkadah sunnahs are actions that the Prophet (pbuh) performed at times and omitted at others. While one earns thawab by observing these sunnahs, there is no punishment, condemnation, or reprimand for not performing them. (Sayyid Sharif al-Jurjani, at-Ta’rifat, Beirut 1403/1983, p. 122; Ibn Nujaym, al-Bahrur-Raiq, Cairo 1311, I, 17-18)

The initial sunnahs of the night (isha) and afternoon (asr) prayers fall under the category of ghayr-muakkadah. Additionally, the extra sunnahs related to the Prophet’s (pbuh) practices regarding dressing, sitting, grooming, and putting on shoes are also included in this category.
