MISWAK: The Sunnah of Hygiene

Muslims have long utilized a naturally occurring tool called the Cleaning Stick (known as Miswak or Siwak) to maintain oral hygiene in Islam. It is believed that even the Prophets utilized this tool to seek Allah’s acceptance and pleasure. The use of Siwak—also known as Nature’s little Toothbrush—has become a key part of Islamic oral hygiene practices and is permissible across various Islamic sects. Due to its widespread usage, Miswak is renowned for its numerous health benefits.

Ibn Umar (R) recorded the words of the Messenger ﷺ , who said,

“You must develop the habit of using the Miswaak regularly because it will keep your mouth healthy, and it is a delight for Allah (to see Muslims using Miswak).”

(Bukhari)

Abu Huraira narrated and is mentioned in Sahih Bukhari 887 Mawsuli:

“Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, ‘If it were not too hard for my followers or the people, I would have asked them to use Siwak to cleanse their teeth for every Salah (prayer).’”

  • Miswaak usage regularly provides relief during the moments of dying, easing the separation of the Rooh (Soul) from the body when the time for death arrives. (SHARHUS SUDOOR)
  • Miswak increases the reward of Salaat (prayer), making it 70 to 400 times more rewarding. (HADITH)
  • Miswak clears the voice, as stated in TibbeNabawi.
  • Miswak helps earn higher ranks in Jannat (Paradise) for the one who uses it.
  • The use of Miswak brings the companionship of the Angels.
  • And the greatest benefit of using Miswak is the attainment of Allah Ta’ala’s Pleasure, which surpasses all other rewards.
